Psychotherapy as a Platform to Emotional Growth
Psychotherapy is a platform from which you can begin to seek and discover a healthier life. Exploring the self in Psychotherapy can be very much like traveling and discovering a new place. On my website, I use travel as my metaphor for Psychotherapy. Metaphors often help the mind create an association to something we already understand.
So what do travel and psychotherapy have in common?
Aside from the idea that both travel and therapy are journeys, there are other connections.
When planning a trip, We ask the questions “Where do I want to go?”, “Where do I want to be?“, “Who do I want with me on this journey?”. We look at the options. We often discuss our past travels and how we reached those destinations. We begin to evaluate and make decisions. We gather and process information. We learn about where we are going and the best and safest way to get there. We discuss hopes, fears, expectations and concerns. We make decisions. We talk about what to pack in our bags. We pack and unpack repeatedly, wanting to be sure we have all the necessities. We try to lighten our load by letting go of “stuff” in our bags too heavy to carry. We make room for the essentials.
In life, as in psychotherapy, we look at balancing four major areas: Emotional, Mental, Physical and Spiritual. All inter-connected and equally important in maintaining a healthy being. If any one of these areas are malnourished, deficient, lacking or neglected, you begin to see an imbalance which can manifest in symptoms of fatigue, distraction, poor physical health, depression, anger, anxiety, lack of direction, and hopelessness.
In Psychotherapy, I focus on the journey of discovery and awareness. This journey can help you begin to identify unhealthy thoughts and behavior patterns, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle. Stops along the way allow for opportunities to become more self aware by exploring presenting problem areas. Awareness allows us to identify and begin to make changes in thoughts and behavior. The Psychotherapy process is a ticket that allows time to ask questions, to learn about the self, to begin to heal and to process the ins and outs of our lives. It is a safe place to express emotions and thoughts. Psychotherapy is the direct “train” to your emotional growth.
Imagine you are in a train station. Exhausted, you step off the train, tired from the hundreds of miles you traveled. As you look around, you find that each train leads to a different destination. The past stops are a combination of places you would like to return to and some places you hope to never visit again. There are other trains that lead to new places of awareness and change. You are faced opportunities to make changes. As we are all conductors of our own lives. We create situations, we make choices and we repeat patterns of behavior. Isn’t time for you to board the right train? If you’re interested…take a ride through my website to gather more information.
